Nadine Shah
Nadine Petra Katarina Shah (born 16 January 1986) is an English singer-songwriter. Shah was born in Whitburn, South Tyneside to a Pakistani father and an English mother of half-Norwegian descent. She relocated to London as a teenager to pursue a career as a jazz singer, but by nineteen years old, she quit jazz and briefly attended art school before settling on her career as a songwriter. Noted for her prominent Geordie accent and theatrical vocal delivery, Shah's music has been characterised as post-punk, alternative rock, and gothic pop; chief vocal and musical influences include Nina Simone and Scott Walker, among others.
Following a pair of extended plays, her debut studio album, Love Your Dum and Mad, was released in July 2003 and was produced by Ben Hillier, with whom she has since created all of her music. Her third album, Holiday Destination (2017), was nominated for the 2018 Mercury Prize. In 2022, Shah made her acting debut on a stage production of A Midsummer's Night Dream as the character Titania, subsequently earning a nomination at the 2023 WhatsOnStage Awards for Best Professional Debut Performance. Her fifth and most recent studio album, Filthy Underneath, was released in February 2024.
